Description

Ranked as a Pauillac Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification, Château Lynch-Moussas was acquired by Jean Castéja in 1919 and has been one of the jewels of the family properties for a century. Passed down to his son Émile, and then by him to his daughter Chantal and his son Philippe, the estate has benefited from the attentions of each generation of the Castéja family, who have cared for, developed, modernised and enhanced this Grand Cru d’Excellence.

In the 2000s, Philippe Castéja took over and intensified the changes and modernizations with, in particular, the arrival of Denis Dubourdieu and his team. It was during the 2001 vintage that Émile and Philippe Castéja launched the 2nd wine of Château Lynch-Moussas, Les Hauts de Lynch-Moussas, made from younger plots.

Tasting Notes

Grape Blend: 83% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot

"The 2016 Lynch Moussas is a blend of 17% Merlot an 83% Cabernet Sauvignon cropped at 48 hectoliters per hectare between 3 and 19 October. Matured in 60% new oak and the remainder one year old, this has a concentrated bouquet that offers tobacco-infused black fruit, briary and then with aeration, veins of pencil lead. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin cloaked in plenty of black fruit, quite spicy for Lynch Moussas with a touch of orange rind developing towards the finish. I appreciate the salinity on the aftertaste here. This is excellent and may well surpass the impressive 2015 last year."
